Fulking, West Sussex
A historic Sussex pub beneath the South Downs.
Locally sourced food & Sussex craft beers since the 1800s.
Winter hours until March — Open Wednesday to Sunday — Booking is essential
The Shepherd & Dog began life as a cluster of cottages that became a public house around the early 1800s. Named for the annual sheep washing in the nearby stream, it was the place shepherds went to recover after hours spent in bitterly cold water.
Over two centuries, the pub has served farm workers, sheltered smugglers' contraband in concealed cavities below the floor, hosted Land Army girls and Allied soldiers during WWII, and welcomed BBC film crews capturing Morris dancers in 1945.
Today, housed within two Grade II listed buildings — a 17th-century timber-framed structure and adjacent 18th-century stables — the Shepherd & Dog continues its tradition of warm hospitality, exceptional food, and the finest local ales.

Everything on our menu is rooted in Sussex. Our meat comes from Knepp Castle's rewilding estate, our vegetables from local Sussex farms, and our menus change with the seasons. We believe the best food doesn't travel far.
